Graeme Finn, Mentor
Biography:
Along with my wife Heather and our two daughters, Claire and Morgan, we run a beef operation near Madden, Alberta. We rent around 2800 acres of pasture on long-term agreements for our yearling grass operation and beef cow herd. We focus on year-round grazing in high legume pastures, annual crop grazing, and intensive rotational and winter swath grazing strategies.
When assessing the potential productivity of possible pastures to rent we have found that most require major rejuvenation. We mainly sod seed pastures - the goal being to start with a clean seed bed. We then use a fall or spring burn off with glyphosate for weed and existing vegetation control if needed. In addition to increasing soil health and promoting sustainability throughout our grazing program, we have found that a mixture of grasses and legumes gives us the best milk production and weight gains for our grazing cattle. We always say: do not be afraid of using legumes! With grazing management they can be the best for your pastures.

Matthew Heneliak, Mentor
Biography:
Born and raised in Oxford County, Ontario, Matthew followed in the footsteps of his father, former President of Norwich Packers, Richard Heleniak. Richard, a well respected business and cattleman, groomed Matthew from a young age in the many areas needed to create quality beef from ‘hoof to plate’.
After deciding that Agricultural Business was the career of choice, Matthew attended the University of Guelph (2 years) and Oklahoma State University (3 years) to further develop his skill set. During his time at these Universities, Matthew became a member of OSU meat judging team and earned a degree in Animal Science.
After the sad passing of his father during his last semester of school, Matthew came home to take on the responsibilities of his father, which included cattle procurement, and plant/feedlot management at Norwich Packers. Along with Richard’s brother and partner at “Norpac” Ron Heleniak, they have maintained and grown the well-respected family business for the past decade guiding it through the very challenging post BSE era of the Canadian beef industry.
It was during the BSE crisis Matthew saw an opportunity in the cow/calf segment of the industry with the deeply discounted prices and he quickly expanded his herd from a few cows to 80 head, adding the Hawkeye moniker as the farm name in the process. Always thinking of cattle from a packer & feedlot perspective, Limousin was an easy choice for the foundation of the herd, for their unmatched ability to combine yield, feed efficiency, growth, and tenderness. In the 12 years since its inception, Hawkeye has morphed into a premium herd with 30 purebred/full blood Limousin and 90 commercial cows.Cattle/year.
