Daniel Doerksen’s visit to Ontario

Daniel Doerksen was hosted by his mentor, Mike McMorris, following the CYL negotiations and governance training at the CCA Semi Annual Meeting in London, ON in mid August. Daniel is a rancher from Gem, AB. For more information on Daniel and Mike you can visit out Participant Spotlight page.

After attending CYL Step 2 Training in London, Ontario I had the opportunity to spend a couple days with my mentor Mike McMorris touring London and Guelph.

On day one we started off touring the town that Mike lives in as we made our way to Guelph were Mike’s office is.  I had an opportunity to meet the staff at BIO and gave a short presentation to them about our farm and how I see BIO helping us with our operation at home.  This was a great opportunity to work on some public speaking skills.  As well, I got a rundown on how [ ]

International Livestock Congress and CS Cattle Trail

In July, several CYLs attended the International Livestock Congress held in Calgary on July 10th and many also volunteered with the Calgary Stampede Cattle Trail exhibit – an interactive and engaging presentation on the beef cattle industry. A few of the participants shared their experience:

Daniel Doerksen from Gem, AB attended ILC:

ILC was an informative conference with knowledgeable speakers from different areas of the ag industry.  There was a very positive outlook for the future of agriculture with China’s middle class growing to 400 million people and global food demand rising by 1.5%.  This could open up more opportunity for the Canadian cattle industry.  A big highlight for me was hearing Lee Leachman talk about their cattle operation and how they are using BIO Track to improve profitability on their ranch. Since my mentor is the General Manager of BIO (Mike McMorris) it was really great to here from someone who is [ ]

Life as a BC Cattle Rancher – Team Erika

2013 Graduate Erika Strande has continued her work with her mentor Erika Fossen past the end of their CYL mentorship. Their latest project is a blog that highlights their lives as women owning/working on BC cattle ranches and the importance of the BC and Canadian cattle industries. Both are dedicated to these industries and are keen to improve the lines of communication between the producer and the consumer. This is one step that they are taking to address this challenge.

CYL participants benefit from learning opportunities at ILC USA

Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) participants attended the International Livestock Congress USA in Denver recently and took in a number of presentations supporting the event’s theme, Feeding the World II – Meeting the Challenge.

The ability of the beef industry to meet the challenge of feeding a burgeoning global population was the topic du jour and presentations on topics such as sustainability and traceability scored high marks with CYL participant Amy Mayner.

“It is inspirational to see so many speakers, producers and industry representatives with such a passion for improving the cattle industry both domestically and internationally. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to observe this firsthand,” Mayner said.

During the action-packed trip six CYL participants and a [ ]

CYL Mentees at BC Town Hall Meeting and Canfax Marketing Forum

On November 13-14 Kerry Hyatt attended the first annual Canfax Marketing Forum in Calgary with her mentor Anne Dunford. She said in addition to all of the great information that was presented to attendees by very qualified speakers, the forum was a valuable opportunity to network with others in the beef industry.

On October 22, Cole Bailey and Erika Strande attended the CCA Town Hall Meeting in Kamloops, BC. Both shared their CYL experience with the 100 beef producers that gathered for the event by joining the representatives from the CCA, BCRC and Canfax that spoke at the event. These two made my job of ‘selling’ the CYL program a no brainer! It was very easy for the producers to see the merit in this program with two outstanding well-spoken mentees standing in front of them and sharing how CYL has opened up opportunities for learning, networking and personal development.

Beef Cattle Research Council Meeting by Katie Wood

Prior to our Fall Forum in October, 2012 CYL Mentee Katie Wood sat in on a BCRC meeting in Calgary alongside her mentor Reynold Bergen, BCRC’s Science Director. Here is  what she had to say about the experience:

I was lucky enough to attend the fall meeting of the Beef Cattle Research Council on Oct 11 and 12th in Calgary. The council consists of members of each of the check-off contributing provinces as well as BCRC staff. This fall meeting was to review the research proposals for and determining funding decisions for the upcoming Beef Research Cluster funded projects. Over the two day meeting each of the research proposals were discussed and the council voted to accept or reject each proposal. The projects fall under one of seven categories: grains and forages, feeding and feed efficiency, animal health, food safety, beef quality, environment, and technology transfer. As a future [ ]
