Beef Cattle Research Council Meeting by Katie Wood

Prior to our Fall Forum in October, 2012 CYL Mentee Katie Wood sat in on a BCRC meeting in Calgary alongside her mentor Reynold Bergen, BCRC’s Science Director. Here is  what she had to say about the experience:

I was lucky enough to attend the fall meeting of the Beef Cattle Research Council on Oct 11 and 12th in Calgary. The council consists of members of each of the check-off contributing provinces as well as BCRC staff. This fall meeting was to review the research proposals for and determining funding decisions for the upcoming Beef Research Cluster funded projects. Over the two day meeting each of the research proposals were discussed and the council voted to accept or reject each proposal. The projects fall under one of seven categories: grains and forages, feeding and feed efficiency, animal health, food safety, beef quality, environment, and technology transfer. As a future researcher, I found it very insightful to observe the whole process and listen to the discussion amongst the council members on the merits and pitfalls of each proposal. I would like to thank the BCRC council and staff for allowing me to attend this meeting. I hopefully will be able to take what I have learned from this unique opportunity and incorporate it into writing proposals of my own one day.

Beef Value Chain Round Table by Katie Wood

2012 CYL Mentee Katie Wood from Ontario had the opportunity to attend the Beef Value Chain Round Table in Ottawa along with fellow mentee Erika Strande from British Columbia. Here is what she had to say about her experience:

I had the opportunity to attend the Beef Value Chain Round Table meeting in Ottawa on Oct 2nd and 3rd, 2012. The meeting provides a platform for all  stakeholders in the industry to meet and discuss issues, challenges and opportunities for the industry as a whole. Representatives from government (both provincial and federal), industry representative groups like the Canadian Cattleman’s Association and National Cattle Feeders Association, research groups like BCRC and Livestock Gentec as well as large industry like Cargil and XL Foods and more, were all are represented at the roundtable. This roundtable came at a pertinent time as the XL Beef recall was in full swing and receiving heaps of media attention. At times the air of tension, stress, and concern was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Although the agenda was full of updates from various parties, everyone was concerned with the future of the industry due to the recall. Early in the meeting it was decided that the second day’s agenda was to be put aside in order to discuss a plan of action to deal with the beef recall and all agreed that it was the 1st priority. The meeting continued, receiving short presentations updating stakeholders on a variety of topics including BSE surveillance, Growing Forward II, CFIA on feed regulations, cattle traceability, Regulatory Cooperation Council/Beyond the Border, studying possible changes to beef grading, Canada Beef Inc update, sustainability issues update and more. Some “action items” included the need for the formation of a BSE policy committee, to support the efforts of the RCC/Beyond the Border and to continue the discussion on traceability. On day 2 of the BVCRT the focus was the recall. We were joined by the Assistant Deputy Minister of Agriculture, and received an update on the situation from CFIA and XL Foods. One of the major concerns was the need for improved communications throughout the value chain on this issue and then addressing media concerns and communicating the right message. The roundtable also wanted to convey to the Minister the severity of the situation and the immense value of the infrastructure the XL plant represents to the Canadian beef industry and the urgency of the situation as a whole. Although at times the mood of the meeting was somewhat intense and sombre, it was a tremendous opportunity to listen to the entire food value chain. I highly recommend any CYLers try and attend one of these meetings if you have the opportunity to do so.

2012 Fall Forum and Tour of Southern Alberta

On October 18, 2012, CYL Mentees gathered at the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) office in Calgary to here from some of the leaders in the beef industry. The CYL Mentees were also joined by representatives from the Alberta Meat and Livestock Agency (ALMA) and the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association. That morning,

participants heard from Rob McNabb (General Manager of the CCA), Gordon Cove (ALMA), Reynold Bergen (Beef Cattle Research Council), Cindy Delaloye (Canadian Beef Grading Agency), Annemarie Pederson (Canada Beef Inc.) and Brian Perrilat (Canfax). Then we were off to see the Cargill Meat Solutions Plant in High River. Once our tour of the plant was finished we were joined by the General Manager of the High River plant, Scott Entz, and the General Manager of the Spruce Grove plant, Tim Hardman. Many of the participants of the forum agreed that this stop was a highlight!

The next day saw our tour start at the Lethbridge Research Centre with presentations on hot topics such as E. Coli and animal welfare. Cargill once again hosted our group as we toured their Animal Nutrition plant in Lethbridge. Our next two stops were at feedlots in the area. First we were toured around Kasko Feedlot and saw such things as the potatoes that are a part of their ration, their corn crop that was nearly ready for harvest, GrowSafe watering system, and pen set up. Then it was on to Kolk Farms where we saw their indoor handling system, yards, electronic record keeping, and pen set up among other sights. Our final stop was back in Calgary at AdFarm, an agricultural advertising agency. Kim McConnell, one of our mentors and founder of AdFarm was our host. He gave us a tour of their unique office that is designed to reflect the strength of the grain industry in Alberta, complete with some of the interior decor and furnishings purchased from UFA. During the tour he also reflected on the history of the company.
